Now, there is no combination of words that can possibly describe my love for the story of Clockwork Princess. When this book first came out, I read it cover to cover in EIGHT HOURS. Eight. Hours. Crazy, right? I remember having ten pages left and being dragged to church while crying my heart out over the epilogue… Heh, it was an (insert creative adjective here) book. And it’s been my favorite book ever since I read it for the first time.
But there’s also something I haven’t shared with you all – I also have a special place in my heart for anime and manga. It’s a beautiful art form and I love admiring the work that comes out of this genre.
So when my friend – and parabatai – Michaela (from bookishreviewsandmore) found a ton of copies of this graphic novel at our favorite used books bookstore, Half Priced Books, I asked her to buy my a copy. And I’m so glad I did!
Honestly, I blew through reading this graphic novel – and I admit I’m reading them out of order, considering that I read the last one and still have to get the first two – which I regret, because I didn’t give myself a lot of time to appreciate the art work. But in the moments that I did slow down in, I was absolutely blown away by how Baek Hye Kyung was able to encapture the characters so thoroughly in her pictures.
The only downside to graphic novels/manga based off of a 800+ paged novel is that you don’t get the full effect of the story. Certain conflicts and plot events have to be sacrificed for the sake of the length of the novel. But, this graphic novel also served as a beautiful summary of my favorite book of all time.
If you are a fan of The Infernal Devices trilogy – or enjoy graphic novels in general – and haven’t picked up these graphic novels yet, I highly recommend them! I know I’ll be picking up Clockwork Angel and Clockwork Prince in this form as quickly as I am able too.
“I am leaving, but I am living. I will not be gone from you entirely, Will. When you fight now, I will be still by you. When you walk in the world, I will be the light at your side, the ground steady under your feet, the force that drives the sword in your hand.”
